At the Doha Forum, the new US special envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack, declared that a “benevolent monarchy” has “worked best” in the Middle East and praised the administration of President Ahmad al-Sharaa as “epic” and “heroic” after the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. At the same time, Abu Mohammad al-Jolani gives a sermon in the Umayyad Mosque calling on Syrians to “obey me as I obey God in you.”
We break down what this language really means. When Jolani says “obey me as I obey God in you”, he is not talking about spirituality – he is signaling the closure of every door to individual freedom, political pluralism, women’s rights, elections and secular law. It is a call to replace modern civil law and human rights with strict Islamist legislation, jihadist concepts of the ummah, and harsh punishments for anyone who defies his doctrine.
We discuss how this rhetoric turns God into a tool of power, justifying total control over the state, society and private life – and how Western elites, instead of defending democracy and secular citizenship, now flirt with the idea of a “benevolent” Islamic monarchy as long as it serves their interests.
